BRANDON—Mike McEwen will play Reid Carruthers for a Manitoba men’s curling championship here in the final of the Safeway Championship at Westman Place Sunday afternoon (2:30 p.m., Sportsnet West).
McEwen advanced to this afternoon’s final with a long-awaited 6-4 victory over his nemesis Jeff Stoughton in this morning’s semifinal game.
“That felt like a huge mental breakthrough,” said McEwen. “That was eight years of pent up frustration right there.”
McEwen had lost three finals and a semi-final to Stoughton at this event since 2010, but vowed Saturday night: “Not this time.”
And then he delivered on that promise Sunday morning when it mattered most. Down 4-3 to Stoughton, McEwen scored a deuce in the eighth end, stole another in the ninth end and then made a double takeout with his last rock of the 10th end to finally and mercifully vanquish Stoughton at the provincials.
At age 51 and an 11-time Manitoba men’s champion, Stoughton was asked Sunday morning if the loss to McEwen might prove to be the last we’ve seen of a man who holds every record worth mentioning at the Manitoba men’s curling championship.
“I have no idea,” Stoughton laughed.
