Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 23/02/2015 (3941 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
NDP leadership candidate Theresa Oswald won a comparatively small labour endorsement today in her bid to become the province’s next premier.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union (IBEW) formally threw its support behind Oswald at event at its Notre Dame office.
IBEW 2085 business manager Russ Shewchuk said the union supports Oswald because she’s the only one of the three candidates that best matches “a phoenix rising from the ashes” and can stop Brian Pallister and his Progressive Conservatives from forming the next government.
IBEW 2085 represents electrical workers throughout Manitoba and Nunavut and will send 15 delegates to the March 8 leadership vote.
Compared to labour endorsements already won by Premier Greg Selinger and challenger Steve Ashton, the IBEW endorsement for Oswald is relatively small potatoes.
Ashton has been endorsed by the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg and the United Steel Workers. The fire fighter’s union will send 25 delegates and the steel workers will send 62 delegates to the leadership vote.
Selinger already has the backing of the Canadian Union of Public Employees and its allotted 288 delegates.
Later today, UFCW Local 832 President Jeff Traeger will announce which candidate his union supports.
