Two local sports legends and one historic team are set to be inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame this spring.

On Tuesday, the hall announced that 1920s-era basketball athletic George Wilson, Bombers star Nick Miller, and the 1954 Winnipeg Rams football team will all be inducted at a Club Regent gala dinner on April 25.

Wilson was a key player in the Winnipeg Toilers basketball dynasty of the ‘20s and 30’s. He served as a captain of the teams which won a Canadian championship in 1926 and ’27, and served as playing manager during a third championship run in 1932. The hall hopes to have Wilson’s son Claude Wilson accept the induction on behalf of his late father.

Miller played 11 season with the Bombers starting in 1954, during which time the squad went to six Grey Cup finals and won four. He was named the Tommy Lumsden Memorial Award winner in 1963 as the Bombers’ top Canadian, and was inducted into the Winnipeg Football Club’s own Hall of Fame in 1996.

In the team category, the 1954 Winnipeg Rams will be inducted in honour of their Canadian Intermediate championship win. That year, the Rams bested the Peterborough Orfuns at the old Winnipeg Stadium in Nov. 20, with a late-game interception that kept a 16-12 win alive.

Tickets for the induction evening on April 25 are available for $40 through Sport Manitoba’s website at http://www.sportmanitoba.ca/nightofchampions
