The Assiniboine Park Zoo announced an extended-hours trial run for the summer.
“We’ve had a few inquiries about why the zoo isn’t open in the evenings in the summer, so this gives us a chance to see what our attendance numbers are like, (and) to evaluate and determine if this is something we would change,” zoo spokeswoman Laura Curtis told the Free Press.
The Zoo will now remain open until 8 p.m., changing from the typical 5 p.m., every Wednesday during the month of July.
It was also decided to continue to offer regular discounts for the first Tuesday of each month. Adult, senior and youth admission will be $12, with children aged three and older $10 and those under three receiving free admission.
“It’s clear that these types of promotions are very popular and that’s why we’ve decided to offer a regular monthly discount day at the Zoo,” Lorne Perrin, Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s vice president of parks services, said in a statement.
Curtis said the Zoo sees its busiest time during the spring/summer season, but winter has been picking up in the past couple years.
“We’ve has a very busy winter. People are definitely starting to realize the zoo is a great winter destination,” said Curtis.
With some new furry additions in the past couple month – including a cougar cub and a polar bear from Toronto Zoo – the Zoo is prepping for the busy season.
“Right now we are just getting ready for spring break… The snow has melted, spring is here and we are just hoping to see more visitors.”
