The NDP executive has ratified the nomination of Amanda Lathlin as the party’s candidate in the soon-to-be-called byelection in The Pas.

The executive held a special meeting Thursday evening to review the result, which was decided by a coin toss after Lathlin and a second candidate, Florence Duncan, finished in a tie with 295 votes after second-ballot voting last Saturday.

Nanci Morrison, the party’s secretary, said this morning the executive upheld the decision, noting precedents for employing a coin toss to break ties both within the NDP in Manitoba as well as by other groups outside the province.

The Pas is considered a safe NDP seat.

Lathlin is the daughter of former NDP MLA Oscar Lathlin, who died in 2008. She is also a member of the NDP executive, although Morrison said she recused herself from the discussion.

The seat has been vacant since NDP MLA Frank Whitehead resigned last May 16 due to health reasons. Under law, the vacancy must be filled within a year. Premier Greg Selinger has yet to call the byelection. The minimum campaign period is 33 days.
