Defenceman Toby Enstrom will be an option for the Winnipeg Jets this week based on words Sunday morning from head coach Paul Maurice.
Enstrom had to leave Saturday’s 5-4 victory over the Vancouver Canucks with just less than five minutes remaining after being knocked against the boards.
He left the ice under his own power but looked to be in serious discomfort.
“He came back better than he left so we’ll bring him and there’s a chance he’ll play on the road trip,” Maurice said Sunday at the MTS Centre. “We’ll list him as day-to-day.
“We’ll see how he is tomorrow before we make any decisions on tomorrow night’s game.”
If Enstrom can’t go on Monday, rookie Ben Chiarot is likely the player the Jets will turn to.
Chiarot comes off the injured reserve list today, Maurice said. He’s been out since Feb. 21 when he broke his hand in a fight in Toronto.
He has missed 17 games.
The Jets’ regulars did not practise today, opting for meetings instead.
The team travels to Minnesota this afternoon and meets the Wild Monday night at Xcel Energy Centre.
That starts a three-game road trip this week that includes stops in St. Louis and Denver.
The Jets begin the final week of the regular season at 92 points and in a tie for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot.
Their standing has its complexities. First off, if the Jets win their final four games, they’re in the playoffs no matter what.
Today, though they’re tied with the Kings, they’ll lose that tie-breaker. Winnipeg trails Calgary, which is currently third in the Pacific, by one point, though the Flames have played one more game and have only three to go, including in Winnipeg on Saturday.
The Flames and Kings are members of the Pacific Division and can qualify automatically by finishing in the top three in the division.
In the Central, the Jets are also only four points back of the Wild (92-96), who are the first wild-card team.
