Wow Hospitality’s proposal to operate a restaurant on Esplanade Riel has the thumbs up from city hall.

Wow, a Winnipeg company that operates Peasant Cookery, 529 Wellington and five other high-end or medium-end restaurants, hopes to open a French-themed restaurant called Mon Ami Louis in the pedestrian-bridge space previously occupied by Chez Sophie and Salisbury House.

Council’s downtown committee voted Thursday morning to approve a Wow lease that would see the restaurant operate for five months of the year and open for special events during the remaining seven months. Mon Ami Louis would be open for brunch, lunch and dinner from May 1 to Sept. 30.

Under the terms of the five-year lease, Wow must also invest $100,000 into the space and be open by mid-July. The rent will amount to five per cent of gross sales during the summer months.

The terms are different from the ones that faced Chez Sophie and Salisbury House. The city selected Wow’s proposal over seven other submissions.

Chez Sophie closed in February, after 20 months of operation. Its owners, Sophie and Stephane Wilds, were given free rent for the first year of a five-year lease, in exchange for renovations totaling $150,000 to $200,000.

Prior to Chez Sophie, Salisbury House operated in the space.
