Winnipeg’s airport this afternoon is full of fans and supporters waiting to greet the national Women’s soccer team from Down Under.
The Charleswood Under 10 girls practised drills around the baggage carousel waiting for the Aussies.
Australia’s women’s soccer team is ranked 10th in the world.
Canada 2015 will be Australia’s sixth appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Australia only missed the first Cup held in 1991 and have twice reached the quarter-finals in 2007 and 2011.
They play the U.S. Monday at 6:30 p.m. and Nigeria Friday, June 12 at 4 p.m. at Winnipeg’s Investors Group Field.
The youthful Matildas were the second-youngest team at the last FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany in 2011.
Australia is preparing to play an upbeat tournament.
“We want to go out and be positive, back ourselves and win games,” Australia’s coach Alen Stajcic is reported to have said earlier. “We would rather lose and be positive, than have a negative mindset going into a game,”
