About four dozen homes in St. Boniface have been evacuated as a precaution because of a gas leak this afternoon.

City fire crews are at the scene of the leak, which occurred about 12:20 p.m. near the corner of Des Meurons and Eugenie streets.

Damage to the 12-inch “high-pressure gas line” happened when a saw clipped it as pavement was being sawed by a contractor, said a spokeswoman with Manitoba Hydro.

No injuries or instances of someone feeling ill have been reported.

Gas and electric service has been shut off to the evacuated homes, as a precaution.

Manitoba Hydro staff are working to fix the leak, but no time has given for when repairs will be completed.
