The Winnipeg Jets understand the importance of having some defensive depth.

The club announced Friday it has agreed to terms with defenceman Andrew MacWilliam on a one-year, two-way deal, worth an annual average value of $600,000. He’ll help augment a roster that was occasionally hammered by injuries last season and dressed 12 different defencemen during the course of the campaign.

The 25-year-old Calgary native has been a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization for the past three seasons, registering two points (2A) in 12 NHL games and 16 points (3G, 13A) in 117 AHL games with the Toronto Marlies. MacWilliams is a University of North Dakota product and was part of three WCHA championship clubs.
