The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are not out of the Henoc Muamba sweepstakes but they have company.
The Canadian linebacker, who was drafted and starred with the Bombers before joining the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, has been unable to secure a contract in the NFL following his recent release from the Colts and is now turning his attention on a return to the CFL.
Muamba travelled to Hamilton on Saturday morning for a visit with the Tiger-Cats. Sources confirmed Muamba will get a tour of Hamilton’s facilities and meet with members of the coaching staff. Muamba, however, is not expected to sign a contract with the Tiger-Cats on Saturday.
Agent Johnathon Hardaway is working behind the scenes to find Muamba a home in the CFL. The Tiger-Cats, arguably the best team in Canada right now and a favourite to be in the Grey Cup, have contender status on their side but this will be a long-term deal and money will be a key factor.
Expect Muamba to demand a six-figure signing bonus, a three-year term and annual salary north of $200,000.
The Bombers recently cleared cap space with the trade of Canadian guard Chris Greaves and have money to spend. Muamba makes any team in the CFL better and he’s a ratio breaker.
Other teams expected to make offers are the B.C. Lions and Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Toronto Argonauts would also be interested if only to prevent the Tiger-Cats from getting even better.
