Safeway Championship? Not anymore. After 21 years on the banner, the grocery is stepping down as the title sponsor for the Manitoba men’s provincial curling championship.

CurlManitoba announced the move on Thursday, noting that a new title sponsor will be revealed next week. The 92nd edition of the tournament is set for Selkirk from Feb. 9 to 14.

Safeway jumped on board the curling championship’s title in 1995, when the Safeway Select was hosted in the old Winnipeg Arena. But it already had a long sponsorship association with curling in Manitoba, starting with the Empress Jam Pail curling of the 1960s and an event sponsorship at the long-running MCA Bonspiel.

But its 21-year reign as the championship sponsor comes second only to the original 50-year title run of Macdonald Tobacco, which then gave way to shorter title runs including the British Consols and the Labatt Tankard. The latest change comes one year after rival Sobey’s acquired Safeway’s Canadian arm in a $5.8-billion deal.
