A member of Greg Selinger’s team was the big winner in the 50/50 draw at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers tilt with the Ottawa Redblacks on Saturday.

Minto MLA Andrew Swan took home a cheque for $163,003, soothing his disappointment over the Blue Bombers’ 27-20 loss at Investors Group Field.

“I usually just consider it a donation,” he said Tuesday of his 50/50 purchases. “I never actually expect it’s going to go the other way.”

Swan said he usually buys 50/50 tickets only at Thursday men’s league night at the Thistle Curling Club and at games featuring the Valour Patriots, a West End football team.

He bought $20 worth of tickets on Saturday.

Swan said the first thing he did upon winning was to renew his Blue Bomber season tickets, which he’s held since he was a Free Press newspaper boy in Silver Heights.

On Monday, he splurged on an important piece of household infrastructure — a toilet.

“I’m not ashamed to say that on Monday I went to a local hardware store and picked out a new toilet,” he said after Question Period on Tuesday.

The former justice minister is one of five MLAs who quit cabinet last November over Selinger’s continued leadership. He plans to seek re-election in Minto next spring.

He said he will make a donation to his church as well as to “a few good charities that are important to my family and me.”

He will also set aside some money for his two daughters’ university education.

With Bomber 50/50 draws, the holder of the winning ticket takes home half the accumulated pot for the game with the other half going to support amateur football and other community programming in the province.

On Oct. 3, the $41,108 prize was deemed to be unclaimed after it was determined the winner was ineligible. Kim Babij-Gesell of the Winnipeg Football Club said that ticket had been purchased by a Bomber employee. Under the club’s raffle licence, Bomber employees are not eligible to win the 50/50 prize so the prize had to be deemed unclaimed.
