Someone has been stealing poppy boxes out of restaurants in North Kildonan.
Both the Perkins Restaurant and Boston Pizza have notified police of the thefts, and say the donation boxes at other restaurants along Henderson Highway have also been stolen.
“It’s just really disappointing. The money is supposed to go to veterans who sacrificed for our country,” said Joanne Baker, general manager of the Perkins. Its poppy box was taken at about 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The poppy box at Boston Pizza disappeared Sunday night. Both restaurants have photos of the suspects on video, staff said.
Jonathan Enright, operations director of Boston Pizza Enright Group, said it’s not the first time for the restaurant chain, but it is the first time at that location.
Staff were trying to be on guard, putting the box away during slow periods when the front desk was not always staffed. “These folks were waiting for their opportunity” to steal the donation box, he said.
Unofficial reports say that poppy boxes at the McDonald’s Restaurant and a Tim Hortons on Henderson Highway were also stolen.
Police are investigating.
