Rising Winnipeg speed skater Heather McLean has captured her first individual World Cup medal.

The 22-year-old Winnipegger, who now trains in Calgary, sped to a 38.02 finish in the women’s 500-metre event at the ISU World Cup in Inzell, Germany on Sunday. That was enough to clinch a third-place podium finish.

The bronze is McLean’s second overall World Cup prize, after helping Team Canada to a bronze in team pursuit at a World Cup event in Calgary last month.

The medal-earning time was a hair off a personal best of 37.59 in the 500m distance, which she set just a couple of weeks ago in Salt Lake City. Last season, she ranked first overall in Canada in the 500m distance, and second at the 1,000m length.
