Centre Mark Scheifele was absent from practice today but Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice said the team’s leading goal-scorer will not miss a game.
The Jets face the St. Louis Blues at the MTS Centre on Tuesday night.
“He’s fine,” Maurice said after today’s practice at the MTS Centre. “He’ll be in the lineup tomorrow. Morning skate, too. We’re just getting him back to 100 per cent.”
Scheifele leads the team with 11 goals so far this season. He also has eight assists for 19 points in the team’s first 30 games.
The other item of note at today’s practice was the continuation of a new defensive pairing for the Jets.
Maurice has put Dustin Byfuglien with Jacob Trouba, with Trouba taking his off-side on the left.
The two have never been paired regularly before, other than the odd emergency in-game shift.
Asked what he hoped to see from this duo, Maurice said: “We’re going to find that out. Minutes. Puck movement. Playing against teams that have two very powerful offensive lines. Getting him (Trouba) in those minutes against those kinds of players, not for just development, but he needs to play against those kinds of guys to get to the next level.”
The Jets have two homes games left before the Christmas break, both this week. After the Blues visit Tuesday, the New York Rangers are here on Friday.
The Jets are 3-2-0 so far in the month of December but remain five points out of a playoff berth in the NHL’s Western Conference.
