Manitoba plans to expand or create 11 new provincial parks and ecological reserves at Lake Winnipeg, southeastern Manitoba and near the U.S. border.
The province plans to announce the creation of two new provincial parks and six new ecological reserves today, along with the expansion of two existing provincial parks and one ecological reserve.
Here’s what the province plans to do:
- More than triple the size of Pembina Valley Provincial Park to 1,660 acres from 450 acres. This park runs along the U.S. border, southwest of Morden.
- Expand Moose Lake Provincial Park, which sits near Lake of the Woods in the province’s southeast corner, by 230 acres.
- Create Sturgeon Bay Provincial Wilderness Park on the west side of Lake Winnipeg, where the Mantagao River enters the lake.
- Create Kinwow Bay Provincial Park, also on the west side of Lake Winnipeg, on a peninsula between Kinwow Bay and the community of Jackhead.
- Create Pelican Islands Ecological Reserve in Lake Winnipeg’s northern basin, west of Commissioner Island.
- Create five ecological reserves in southeastern Manitoba, in and around Sandilands Provincial Forest: the Woodridge, Piney, St. Labre Bog, Cedar Bog and St. Anne Bog ecological reserves.
- Expand Lewis Bog Ecological Reserve, which sits in Agassiz Provincial Forest, northwest of Hadashville.
