The funeral and a celebration of life for former lieutenant-governor and longtime Liberal MP John Harvard will be held on Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg.

Harvard died Saturday from cancer at age 77. Harvard was Manitoba’s lieutenant governor from 2004 to 2009. He was the Liberal MP for Charleswood-St.James-Assiniboia from 1988 until 2004.

Harvard was replaced as lieutenant-governor by Philip Lee (2009-2015). Janice Filmon was appointed last June to the position, as the Queen’s representative in Canada.

“I always admire anybody who can put their name on a lawn sign, stand up and let people know what they believe in and try to motivate a team to work them. Certainly he did that,” Filmon told the Free Press.”

“This is somebody who did spend a lot of his life in public service. Whenever anyone does that, I think they do it to make the world a better place.”

Harvard’s wife, Pat Bovey, said in lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a donation is asked to support Winnipeg Harvest, the Buhler Gallery at St. Boniface Hospital and the John Harvard Smart and Caring Community Fund with the Glenboro Area Foundation.
