The Winnipeg Jets will be without No. 2 centre Mark Scheifele for a week as he makes his second trip to sick bay since Christmas.

Jets coach Paul Maurice broke the news after Monday’s optional skate that featured just 13 players. The silver lining on the injury front is that Mathieu Perreault, who did not finish Sunday’s 4-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, should be good to go for Tuesday’s home date against the San Jose Sharks.

“Matty is probable for the game tomorrow. He didn’t go through the morning skate but he feels good,” said Maurice. “Mark had some tests done after the pre-game skate, that was the first time he was on the ice (since being injured late in the shootout loss to Dallas last Thursday) and we didn’t really like the results of that. I don’t have him in the game tomorrow.

Jets centre Mark Scheifele did not practise Saturday and is a game-time decision for Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres.

“I don’t know what the right number of days on it is, but he’s going to be at least five or six days, maybe a week before we’re looking at having him back on the ice.”

Scheifele, who is out with what is being called a ‘lower-body injury’ is tied for fifth in scoring with the Jets with 12 goals and 11 assists in 37 games. He also missed four games just after Christmas after a collision with Andrew Ladd in a Boxing Day practice saw him suffer a concussion.

The Jets also announced on Monday that defenceman Paul Postma has been assigned to the Manitoba Moose on a ‘two week, or shorter’ conditioning stint. The 26-year-old has played in just two games this year for the Jets, the last coming Nov. 10th in Minnesota.

“It’s to get him into some games and get him playing,” said Maurice. “Other than that, we didn’t have anybody that didn’t skate today that we’re concerned about tomorrow.”

On the ice today for the Jets were forwards Drew Stafford, Chris Thorburn, Alex Burmistrov, Andrew Copp, Nikolaj Ehlers, Joel Armia and Anthony Peluso, defencemen Mark Stuart, Jacob Trouba, Adam Pardy and Ben Chiarot and goaltenders Connor Hellebuyck and Michael Hutchinson.

Hutchinson took a Burmistrov shot off the mask at one point during the practice, prompting him to pull the mask off and throw it into the boards. He was back in the crease a few minutes later.

The Jets face the Sharks Tuesday in the second of a stretch of games that will see them play nine of 10 at MTS Centre.
