Hundreds of pieces of heavy equipment will begin clearing snow from Winnipeg’s residential streets Wednesday morning.
Jim Berezowsky, the city’s manager of street maintenance, said today that residents should double check their snow clearing zone or they could be in for a rude surprise — a ticket or a tow — if they’re parked on a street scheduled to be plowed.
The first streets to be plowed, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, are in zones E, I, M, O, S and U. See the city’s map of snow zones.
“We’ve had snow and drifting conditions over the past week,” Berezowsky said. “The conditions warrant it.”
The city says 400 to 450 pieces of heavy equipment will hit the streets for the plow, which is expected to be completed by Friday at 7 p.m.
Anyone parked in violation of the residential parking ban will get a $150 ticket ($75 if paid early), only if their vehicle is illegally parked between 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. The vehicle could also be towed to a nearby street.
Berezowsky said the citywide residential street plow wasn’t called just because of the additional four centimetres of white stuff which fell and then was blown around by blizzard conditions on the weekend.
“People forget that we received eight centimetres of snow during the week too,” he said. “That, in combination with the weekend snow, pushed the trigger here.”
On Wednesday night the city will plow zones D, G, J, L, N, R and V, followed by on Thursday day zones C, F, H, K, P, Q, and T will be plowed, Thursday night zone B, and Friday day zone A.
Residents can find their zone by going to knowyourzone.winnipeg.ca and putting in their address.
