Jones wins, Einarson crashes at Scotties

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. – Jennifer Jones got her first win of the Canadian nationals on Sunday morning, but Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson crashed in her second match.

Einarson, who collected a comfortable opening win over B.C. on Saturday night, returned to the ice to face Nova Scotia on the second day of play. The game ran off the rails early: with the teams tied 1-1 after two ends, Einarson dealt misses with her next three hammer throws to give up steals of three, four, and one points in a row.

She shook after eight ends, with Nova Scotia ahead 9-3. Believe it or not, Einarson’s team actually curled a little sharper than Nova Scotia overall – the skip herself finished at 79 per cent, while Nova Scotia’s Jill Brothers curled at 73 per cent — but the misses proved deadly.

Elsewhere in the morning draw, Jennifer Jones and Team Canada delivered a smooth 9-4 win over Prince Edward Island’s Suzanne Birt. The reigning champions opened with a single in the first, then collected a deuce every time they had the hammer to build a comfortable win. They now sit 1-1 after two games, following Saturday’s opening loss to Chelsea Carey and Team Alberta.

“They were ready to play today,” Team Canada coach Wendy Morgan said. “Not that they weren’t ready yesterday, but it was a little bit of a rush.”

Carey, by the way, is now 2-0 through two games, as she defeated Team Newfoundland on Sunday morning. Ontario’s Jenn Hanna beat Saskatchewan’s Jolene Campbell in a tight match, to put both teams at 1-1.

Jones and Carey will each play another game on Sunday, as they figure into the evening draw at 7:30 p.m. CST. Jones will face Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville, while Einarson will play Hanna.
