Einarson needs to find big second half to stay in contention at Scotties

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. – While Jennifer Jones rolled to a comfortable morning win at the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson found herself on the wrong side of the scoreboard again.

Einarson fell to Quebec’s Marie-France Larouche in the morning draw, falling 6-5 on a 10th end Quebec deuce. The match started well enough, with Einarson picking up a second-end single then snagging a steal of one in the third. But Larouche pushed back with a three-ender in the fourth, and polished off the win with that final two.

Now, at the halfway mark of the Canadian women’s curling championship, Einarson is at 2-3 on the week and will need to find a big second half to stay in contention as teams start pulling away.

Elsewhere in the morning draw, Jones and Team Canada rode an early five-ender against New Brunswick’s Sylvie Robichaud to a 9-6 win, and are now 3-2 on the week.

And Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville, who has had a strong start in Grande Prairie, survived a rollercoaster game against Prince Edward Island to win 10-8, and rise to 4-1 on the week. That puts her just behind Alberta’s Chelsea Carey, who is the lone unbeaten skip at 5-0 – though the Albertans still have two games to play on Tuesday.

Coming up in the evening draw: Jones has a key game against Saskatchewan’s Jolene Campbell, who looks to have recovered from a tough start and is now also at 3-2. Meanwhile, Einarson will go up against Newfoundland’s Stacie Curtis, who is 1-4 so far this week. Those matches are set to start at 7:30 p.m. CST, and each draw is being broadcast on TSN channels.
