Having deemed what’s left of the NHL a learning experience, Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice used today’s practice at the MTS Centre along those lines.

The Jets were coming off their fifth straight home loss on Tuesday night, 3-2 to the Florida Panthers, a game in which they coughed up a 2-1 lead after two periods.

Today’s session, in advance of Thursday night’s game here against the New York Islanders, was about quickness and simplicity, things Maurice continues to try to drive home to his team.

“There was some real good quickness in our game that has been a challenge for us this year,” the coach said today. “It’s related to how we move the puck and so much of it is just confidence.

That the Jets surrendered their lead and didn’t have the same push in Tuesday’s third period as in the first two was the main problem Maurice was working through.

Winnipeg outshot Florida in that game, 32-22.

“When you have some chances and don’t score, there’s the unconscious thought to just change a little bit, just change how you move the puck through the neutral zone,” he said. “We didn’t get the zone time we had had in the first two (periods) because of that. What I liked, young players or older players, a bunch of them looked like they could play a quicker game, play a simpler game. So that was something that was a good start.”

Today, Blake Wheeler, Toby Enstrom and Mathieu Perreault were all excused from practice on maintenance days. The Jets, last in the Central Division at 26-32-4 and 12 points off the Western Conference line, next meet the Islanders, who currently hold third spot in the Metropolitan Division, with 75 points.
