The Winnipeg Jets took another stride forward in the race to the bottom of the NHL standings, falling 3-2 to the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena Thursday night.

Justin Abdelkader scored at the 15:24 mark of the third period to break a 2-2 tie, capitalizing on a turnover from Tyler Myers behind the Jets’ net that led to an open pass in front for his 17th of the season.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 27-35-5 on the year while the Red Wings improve to 33-23-11 with the win. Winnipeg has now lost 10 of their last 12 games. They entered Thursday tied with Edmonton as the second worst team in the league with 59 points, only four shy of Toronto’s 55.

Winnipeg held a 2-0 edge after the first period with goals from Marko Dano and Tyler Myers, but that lead would be erased in the second with Dylan Larkin and Jonathan Ericsson scoring for the homeside.

Michael Hutchinson made 32 saves in the loss to fall to 7-13-2 on the season. Petr Mrazek earned the win for Detroit, improving to 25-13-6 with a 22-save performance.

The Jets will now travel home and return to action Saturday night when they take on the Colorado Avalanche at the MTS Centre.
