Blackhawks edge Jets 5-4

Brent Seabrook’s game-winner came 1:02 into overtime and rookie Artemi Panarin had a four-point night to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-4 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.

The game had four lead changes. Panarin tied the game twice and finished with two goals and two assists.

Brandon Mashinter and Patrick Kane also scored for the Blackhawks (45-26-7), who are 9-1-0 in their last 10 visits to Winnipeg. Scott Darling made 28 saves.

Blake Wheeler had a pair of goals and an assist for the Jets (32-39-7) while Dustin Byfuglien scored once and added two assists. Nic Petan had the other and Ondrej Pavelec stopped 22 shots.

Wheeler’s three-point night extends his point streak to seven games. He has four goals and six assists during his run and his 71 points on the season, which sets a new career-high.

He scored the 2-2 equalizer goal in the second period and assisted on Dustin Byfuglien’s 3-3 goal in the third before putting Winnipeg ahead with his second goal of the game. Panarin forced overtime when he scored at 15:17 of the third to make it 4-4.

Kane’s 40th goal of the season puts him into a tie with Dallas forward Jamie Benn for second in goals behind Washington forward Alex Ovechkin. Panarin’s 26th and 27th goals of the season leads all NHL rookies, while his four points puts his total at 68 to also lead all freshmen.

Mashinter’s goal was his fourth of the season.

Petan’s second goal of the season opened the scoring, while Mark Scheifele’s third-period assist extended his point streak to six games.

The Blackhawks also continued their dominance of Pavelec, who has yet to beat Chicago through his eight NHL seasons. The 28-year-old goaltender is 0-5-3 in eight career starts against Chicago.

Jonathan Toews needed stitches after taking a puck to his ear midway through the second period that sent the Blackhawks captain directly to the locker room. Toews returned to the game for the third period.

Earlier Friday, Blackhawks defenceman Duncan Keith was handed a six-game suspension for his one-handed stick swing to the face of Minnesota’s Charlie Coyle on Tuesday night. The NHL’s Department of Player Safety described Keith’s action as “an intentional and retaliatory act of violence by a player with a history of using his stick as a weapon.” He will miss five-regular season games and one playoff game.

The Jets, who will miss the playoffs for a fourth time since relocating from Atlanta five years ago, complete their home schedule Sunday night when they host the Minnesota Wild before wrapping up their regular season in California with matchups in Anaheim, San Jose, and Los Angeles.

The Blackhawks, 3-1-0 to finish their road swing, now return home for a trio of games this week against the Bruins, Coyotes, and Blues before finishing their regular season schedule with a visit to Columbus.
