Winnipegger gets 14 months for hoarding child porn

A Winnipeg man described by justice officials as a “hoarder” is headed to jail for building up a huge collection of child pornography that was found among his vast array of movies, music, wrestling magazines and sports memorabilia.

JC Todaro pleaded guilty to possessing and accessing more than 1,000 videos and nearly 2,000 pictures that police found during a search of his home. They had been carefully organized in a variety of forums including scrapbooks and collages and even personal drawings he had in binders, court was told.

The Crown had been seeking a two-year sentence, saying this is one of the larger stashes seized by police. Todaro asked for the mandatory minimum of six-months jail. On Monday, he learned he was getting a 14-month sentence, in addition to three years of supervised probation.

Todaro will not be allowed any online access or to attend places where children may frequent such as parks, pools and playgrounds. His name is also being placed on the national sex offender registry.

Todaro was described in court as an isolated “loner” who spends pretty much all of his time either at his bookkeeping job or at home working on his collections. He suffers from social anxiety and often becomes “fixated” on a subject, according to a pre-sentence report.

In this case, that subject was child pornography. Police found tapes which date back to the 1990s and show very young children being violently sexually abused. The report paints Todaro as a low-risk to act out and he has no prior criminal record.
