The University of Winnipeg said Thursday that Wab Kinew has resigned his executive position at the university after winning a seat in the April 19 provincial election.
Kinew won the Fort Rouge seat for the NDP.
“Kinew has resigned from his role as associate vice-president, indigenous affairs at the University of Winnipeg. He had been on a leave of absence since February 2016 to pursue his candidacy for Fort Rouge. The University of Winnipeg community wishes Wab every success in his new role,” the university said in a news release.
The U of W said Jarita Greyeyes is serving as the acting associate vice-president, indigenous affairs. In the coming weeks, the university said, it will conduct a search and invite applications for this position.
Meanwhile Jeremy Read, former senior executive officer and advisor to president Annette Trimbee, is taking vacation time to ponder his career options, the university said Thursday.
Read has been on secondment leave from the University of Winnipeg since March 2015, serving as chief of staff to outgoing Premier Greg Selinger.
University officials said that Read is entitled to return to a job at the U of W, but could not specify what job or jobs he could fill.
Chris Minaker is now the senior executive officer and advisor to the president.
