City hall is willing to provide the besieged city of Fort McMurray any help it requires.
Mayor Brian Bowman said Winnipeg’s emergency measures coordinator has contacted the fire chiefs of Fort McMurray and Edmonton to see what assistance Winnipeg might provide, and he has also contacted Manitoba provincial officials, who will mobilize local efforts.
“We’ll obviously be stepping up to help Fort McMurray in any way that we can.”
Bowman said there has been no specific request for assistance but said Winnipeg will respond.
“It’s an absolutely horrific situation. Horrific images. The level of coordination has to be immense and Winnipeggers want to do their part.”
Bowman said if any local residents want to help out with financial assistance, they can contact the local office of the Canadian Red Cross.
