Hey there, time traveller!

Niibin (say nee’ bin) is the official name of the flame-topped mascot for the 2017 Canada Summer Games, a name submitted by grade 3 student Taylor Schepp of Winnipeg’s St. Emile Catholic School.
Her entry for the CSG’s Mascot Naming Challenge was chosen from submissions from students in over 530 classrooms in Manitoba and Kenora, Ont., the organizing committee announced on Thursday.
“Niibin is the Anishinaabe word for ‘it is summer.’ I like the name Niibin because it sounds cool, and because it is the Canada Summer Games,” Taylor said in a media release.
Taylor is part of a sports family as her father is Kirby Schepp, the head coach of the University of Manitoba Bisons men’s basketball team and an assistant coach with Canada’s Junior Men’s National Team (U18/U19).
Magical creature
Niibin’s backstory is that it is a magical creature, created by the summer heat who loves to dance, play sports, and head off on adventures.
As winner of the naming challenge, Taylor will be an official torchbearer in the CSG Torch Relay, get a special visit with Niibin, and receive a package of 2017 Canada Summer Games gear.
Jeff Hnatiuk, president and CEO of the 2017 Canada Summer Games, said it was great to see “such a high level of engagement from our region with the Mascot Naming Challenge.”
“Taylor’s name submission is a perfect fit for the 2017 Canada Summer Games mascot,” Hnatiuk said. “We are now looking forward to having Niibin on our team as we build excitement for the Games over the next 15 months.”
The Games’ mascot will visit schools and community events, attend all Games milestone celebrations and major ceremonies, and will be featured in advertisements, on signage and merchandise.
The 2017 Canada Summer Games will be held in Winnipeg on July 28-Aug. 13, 2017 featuring 16 sports, more than 250 events and over 4,000 amateur athletes and coaches from across the country. The Canada Games, which also include a winter competition, is Canada’s largest mult-sport event for young athletes.
2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the CSG and Canada’s 150th birthday.
