Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has something to say on Saturday at the Steinbach Pride march.

His personal message to participants will be delivered by Saint Boniface-Saint Vital Liberal MP Dan Vandal at Steinbach city hall, organizers announced Wednesday on Facebook.

Last weekend in Toronto, Trudeau became the first Canadian prime minister to march in a pride parade.

The inaugural parade made national headlines over the last few weeks after area politicians, including Conservative MP Ted Falk (Provencher), Progressive Conservative MLA Kelvin Goertzen (Steinbach) and Mayor Chris Goertzen said they were skipping the event. Steinbach’s city council has refused to endorse the parade.

Falk initially told the Free Press he would not be attending because was going to the Frog Follies in St-Pierre-Jolys. He later issued a statement saying his personal beliefs would keep him away from the parade even if his schedule was open.

The Pride March for Equality in Steinbach has been billed as a way to show a united front and commitment to LGBTTQ* safety within Manitoba’s so-called Bible Belt communities.

The march was scheduled to begin at Steinbach United Church at 11 a.m. and make its way to city hall. However participants will now assemble at Friesen Park, adjacent to the Jake Epp Library, and precede to city hall.
