Heads up Winnipeg: a new parking bylaw comes into effect Thursday.
The City of Winnipeg is touting the new rules as “streamlined,” writing in a Wednesday press release that the bylaw “creates a point of reference for citizens to find most parking regulations” and “addresses changes that have occurred in the City, its traffic patterns and developments of technology.”
The same release highlighted a few key changes as a result of the new law, including:
– The ability to add 30 minutes to on-street paid parking when initial time has expired
– The ability to obtain a temporary recreational vehicle permit to allow parking for up to three days (as opposed to the former one-hour limit)
– A requirement for street work signs to be posted 24 hours ahead of scheduled work (as opposed to former timeframe of as little as six hours in some cases)
– A requirement that vehicles parked on a street can’t be connected to an electrical cord or wire that crosses the edge of the street
– Expanding jurisdiction on rules about number, type and location of vehicles parked on residential properties: violations are now considered parking offences as well as zoning violations, meaning the Winnipeg Parking Authority as well as other by-law enforcement officers can enforce them
The new by-law was formally passed in July.
