Winnipeg just kept coming in waves in the third period, adding two more goals to close out a 5-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

Mark Scheifele scored on the power-play — the fourth extra-strength goal of the night for the Jets — then helped set up Kyle Connor late in the period for the rookie’s second goal in as may pre-season games.

Scheifele finished the game with a goal and three helpers. Linemate Blake Wheeler also had three assists.

Michael Hutchinson stopped 33 of the 34 shots that came his way.

Dustin Byfuglien left the game with a lower-body injury and did not return.

Jets head into the third with 3-1 lead over the Oilers

The Winnipeg Jets continued to make the Edmonton Oilers pay for taking penalties in the second period.

Toby Enstrom banged in a giveaway early in the middle frame, giving the Jets a 3-0 lead. All three goals came with Oilers sitting in the penalty box.

Tempers flared midway through the period, with Dustin Byfuglien dropping the gloves with Matt Hendricks, followed by Edmonton’s Zack Kassian going after Winnipeg’s Julian Melchiori during the same melee.

Edmonton would get one back late in the second period after a Jan Kostalek turnover ended up on the stick of Oscar Klefbom, who scored on an easy wrap-around to make it a 3-1 game.

Shots were 21-17 for Edmonton through two periods.

Jets take 2-0 lead over Oilers into the second period

A pair of power-play goals have led to a fast start for the Winnipeg Jets.

Adam Lowry and Joel Armia scored in the opening period Friday night to give the Jets a 2-0 lead over the Edmonton Oilers in preseason play at the MTS Centre.

Lowry converted on a nice pass from Blake Wheeler for the first goal, and Armia was then sent in alone on a beautiful feed from Mark Scheifele.

Edmonton outshot Winnipeg 11-8 but couldn’t beat Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson.

Patrik Laine is playing his first game for the Jets, but the rookie phenom was held off the scoresheet.
