Manitoba Corrections is investigating the death of a man in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

A provincial spokeswoman confirmed the death, saying in an email that it occurred Wednesday morning.

No other information on the circumstances of the death were released. The province said it is withholding the name of the deceased for privacy reasons.

“We have launched an internal review and reported the death to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, as required by law,” the email said.

In addition to the standard investigation by the medical examiner, the province has also ordered the Winnipeg police to notify the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba of the death.

The unit is commonly called on to investigate deaths that directly involve peace officers, including police.
