RCMP are hoping an eerie recreation of a young woman’s last day alive before she was raped and slain will dislodge clues to her killer’s identity.

Fifteen-year-old Kerrie Ann Brown’s last day is being recreated on social media Twitter and Facebook Sunday, the 30th anniversary of her death.

The details of her life in Thompson are being sent out in RCMP tweets and Facebook postings throughout the day. Manitoba RCMP social-media accounts have more than 40,000 followers.

Kerrie Ann Brown, a 15-year-old Thompson high school student, was sexually assaulted and killed in 1986.

It’s a bit of a shot in the cyber-dark, conceded lead investigator, Const. Janna Amirault.

“We’re just kind of hoping to do a different approach with social media, and maybe we can reach someone who hasn’t been reached before,” she said. Amirault has never heard of a police department using social media in such a way.

Police have never closed the file on Kerrie’s death. On the 25th anniversary of her death, Crime Stoppers ran a poster campaign.

Short, blond and blue-eyed, Kerrie was a Grade 10 student at R. D. Parker Collegiate in Thompson when she disappeared in 1986.

She was found bludgeoned and sexually assaulted two days later on the outskirts of the city. She had just turned 15.

RCMP released the first three tweets that will go out Sunday, starting at 8 a.m.

0800 “Hello, I’m Kerrie Ann Brown, I was raped, beaten & murdered 30 years ago today. Can you help find my killer?” #rcmpmb #kerrie

0805 “I want to talk about the day I was killed. I want people to know what happened to me. I want the killer caught.” #rcmpmb #kerrie

0815 “What you did to me that night destroyed my family & friends. I didn’t do anything wrong. I was a happy 15-year-old girl.” #rcmpmb #kerrie

The family has given its consent to the use of social media.

“It’s unsolved. That’s why we’re still talking about it,” Brown’s older brother, Trevor, told the Free Press in an interview last month. “We want people talking. We totally believe, somebody, at least one person or more, knows something.”

The family has also set up a Facebook page under the name Justice for Kerrie Ann Brown.
