Manitoba’s Mike McEwen won both of his draws on the first day of the $60,000 Canad Inns Men’s Classic in Portage la Prairie on Friday.

McEwen cruised to a 7-1 win in five ends in the day’s second draw before dispatching Saskatoon’s Bruce Korte 8-2 in Friday’s nightcap.

Reid Carruthers made quick work of Thunder Bay’s Trevor Bonot 8-2 in six ends in the first draw of the day before dropping a 7-5 decision to Regina’s Jason Ackerman.

Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock, the defending champion, was also perfect

2016 Brier champ and world No. 2 Kevin Koe began his day with a 9-3 win over American Mike Siggins and ended it with a 10-5 thumping of Ontario’s Mark Kean.
