The Assiniboine Park Conservancy has been chosen as the winner of the 2016 Skål Sustainable Tourism Award in the major tourist attractions category.

The award announcement was made last Sunday during the opening ceremony of the 77th Skål World Congress held in Monaco. The conservancy was one of 42 international projects competing in eight different categories.

“It’s a huge honour to receive this award and to be acknowledged in this way within the international tourism community,” Bruce Keats, the Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s chief operating officer, said in a statement.

“As a conservation-based organization we are always looking to employ the highest sustainability standards in our operations as well as engage the community to take sustainable actions in their own lives.”

Presented for the 15th year, the Sustainable Tourism Awards highlight and acknowledge excellence in tourism around the world as well as recognize ecotourism and sustainability practices on a global level, a press release stated.

Winners were selected by a panel of three independent judges based on a variety of criteria including contribution to the conservation of nature, cultural heritage conservation, community involvement, innovation and creativity, and educational features.
