MORRIS — Mike McEwen and Reid Carruthers are off to a perfect start at the $45,000 Dekalb Superspiel at the Morris Curling Club.
McEwen, the defending provincial champ, made quick work of Morris’s Coard Allard in an 8-2 win in the first draw Friday morning and dispatched Switzerland’s Yannick Schwaller 6-1 in seven ends after he stole a single in the fifth, sixth and seventh in the third draw Friday afternoon.
Carruthers, who is defending his 2015 Superspiel title this week, eased his way through the first draw of the triple-elimination event with a five-end, 9-1 win over Winnipeg’s Hayden Forrester.
Carruthers needed just six ends in the fourth draw to beat Saskatoon’s Kody Hartung 6-1, ensuring an undefeated day in the triple-elimination event.
On the women’s side, Olympic gold medallist and 2015 Superspiel champ Jennifer Jones and her St. Vital Curling Club rink needed just four ends to put away Beth Peterson in a 7-0 rout.
Jones plays Winnipeg’s Joelle Brown today at noon.
Jones’ former third Cathy Overton-Clapham won her first match of the day 7-4 over Ontario’s Cathy Auld but lost to Ontario’s Allison Flaxey’after she scored two in the eighth end for a 5-4 win.
Winnipeg’s Shannon Birchard is also 2-0.
