Leading Calder Trophy candidate Patrik Laine of the Winnipeg Jets has been sidelined with a concussion after absorbing a heavy neutral-zone hit from Buffalo Sabres defenceman Jake McCabe Saturday afternoon.

Following Sunday’s practice at the MTS Iceplex, Jets head coach Paul Maurice said there is no date for the 18-year-old Finn’s return and he must follow proper procedure for recovery from a head injury.

“Patty’s got a concussion,” said Maurice, whose team dropped a 4-3 decision to the Sabres. “Tested out tonight last night. Sees doctors again today. So he will start the stages of recovery with that. We’ll wait til the symptoms subside and then you start increasing workload and getting back on the ice.”

Laine, who is tied for the NHL lead among rookie goal scorers with 21, watched his teammates practice Sunday but will be given plenty of time to recuperate.

“There can’t be on any of these (injuries),” said Maurice. “We have players this season that have gone through it. There’s no timeline.”

The Jets plan to move veteran right-winger Drew Stafford onto the top line with left-winger Nikolaj Ehlers and centre Mark Scheifele.

Stafford scored 21 times in 78 games last season and has three goals and seven points in 27 games during an injury-plagued 2016-17.

“He’ll go into the hole that Patty was in with Mark and Nik,” said Maurice. “They had some real nice success last year together. It’s really around the time Nik Ehlers started putting some pucks in the net for us. So, he’ll go in there and we’ll leave the others the same.”

Veteran forward Chris Thorburn is expected to draw back into the lineup for Winnipeg’s next game, Monday night against the visiting Calgary Flames.
