Tina Fontaine’s accused killer appeared in court Wednesday with a new lawyer as he puts forward a complaint against police.
Raymond Cormier, 54, appeared in person, with a full, dark grey beard and short hair, in front of provincial court Judge Wanda Garreck to address his Law Enforcement Review Agency complaint.
He is now being represented by defence lawyer Tony Kavanagh, who asked for more time to have discussions about the file. The matter was simply adjourned until Feb. 22, and Cormier is not required to be in court on that date.
Cormier is accusing police of fabricating evidence against him in the high-profile homicide of 15-year-old Tina Fontaine, who was found dead in the Red River on Aug. 17, 2014. Cormier was arrested by Winnipeg Police Service officers in Vancouver on Dec. 9, 2015 and charged with second-degree murder in her death. In July 2016, he launched a complaint against police through the Law Enforcement Review Agency. The agency dismissed the complaint as being outside its scope, and Cormier asked for a review of that decision, leading to the current court process.
During a court appearance by video in late October 2016, Cormier made several allegations against the police, saying “the whole case in general is part of the problem” as to why he’s been accused of second-degree murder.
“This is not a trivial matter,” he said at the time. “It’s extended beyond police fabricating evidence.”
Cormier is set to appear in court for the murder charge in May.
