Students at Collège Garden City Collegiate were confined to their classrooms and the school put in “hold-and-secure” status for about a half an hour during the lunch break on Wednesday after an altercation between two youths.

Seven Oaks superintendent Brian O’Leary said the incident involved a male student from Garden City and an individual who was not a Garden City student but who came into the school. He said police were called and had apprehended a suspect who was taken into custody.

O’Leary said the Garden City incident is unrelated to an incident reported on Tuesday involving an alleged threat to West Kildonan Collegiate, another Seven Oaks School Division senior years school.

BORIS MINKEVICH/WINNIPEG FREE PRESS FILES Collège Garden City Collegiate was in lockdown following an assault.

An email to parents said classes were being held Wednesday afternoon as usual.

“There was an intruder in the school who, in my understanding, assaulted one of the students at the school and then fled the school,” O’Leary said. “At that point, the school went into ‘hold-and-secure’ so they secured the exterior doors and kept students inside.”

Also put into the “hold-and-secure” status were the two nearby schools, H.C. Avery and Forest Park, in case the intruder tried to enter either of those schools, O’Leary said.

The student who was assaulted required medical attention but O’Leary said he had no further information.

He said police had the suspect in custody very quickly after being called.

“Given yesterday and today, I have nothing but praise for the Winnipeg Police Service,” O’Leary said.

An email to parents from Garden City administration said the school “experienced an incident at lunch specific to two students, one from our school and one from another. Everyone in our school is safe. As a precautionary move, we were in secure and hold status (kids are not allowed outside/exterior doors are locked) as we worked through the issue with Winnipeg Police Services.”

The hold-and-secure was lifted by about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday.

A hold-and-secure is different from a lockdown. Students were able to move around within the school as only access to the building was secured and restricted with staff or police at the main entrances.
