ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — Nine games down, eight of them wins, and Michelle Englot and Team Manitoba can rest easy: whatever happens now, they will definitely be playing past the round robin at the 2017 Scotties.

The buffalo gals went two-for-two on Wednesday, taking comfortable wins over Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. That lifted their record to 8-1 on the week; their lone loss was dealt by Team Canada’s Chelsea Carey.

When compared to the rest of the standings, that means the worst Manitoba can do is a tiebreaker.

Englot was pleased with her team’s 8-3 win over Nova Scotia. Manitoba took control of the game early, scoring three in both the fourth and sixth ends; they padded the lead with a steal of one in seven, and shook after eight.

“We played a really solid game tonight,” the skip said. “That’s key going into these final few games, is to start building consistency and momentum… I felt way more confident, and felt like I had control of draw weight.”

They have two games on the docket, both on Thursday. In the morning, Manitoba will face British Columbia’s Marla Mallett, who is just 1-8. The toughest test will be at night, when they’ll go head-to-head with Rachel Homan.

That game — which could be for first place — kicks off at 6:30 p.m. CST, and will be broadcast live on TSN.

Homan, the hands-down favourite to win this Scotties, won an extra-end squeaker against Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville on Wednesday. That let Homan stay undefeated at 9-0, and slipped McCarville down to 4-3 on the week.
