A remote northern community’s only grocery store went up in flames early Sunday morning.
Thompson rural RCMP responded to a fire at 4:15 a.m. in Brochet, which resulted in the total destruction of the community’s grocery store. There were no injuries. RCMP say the cause of the fire appears suspicious.
It is being investigated as arson at this time, said RCMP, who noted that a definitive cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
The Office of the Fire Commissioner is assisting with the investigation, RCMP said.
Brochet is located in northern Manitoba on the northern shore of Reindeer Lake near the Saskatchewan border.
There is no year-round road service to the mostly-Cree community of just under 200 people.
