One of the most recognizable faces on the Winnipeg sports scene is rolling the dice on a new career.
Gary Lawless, a former columnist with the Free Press and a current analyst with TSN radio and television, is joining the Vegas Golden Knights, an NHL expansion club that begins play in the fall.
Lawless has been hired as the club’s “Insider,” and will write stories, columns, features, event recaps and player/staff profiles on vegasgoldenknights.com and will serve as the team’s lead on-camera reporter, filing daily video recaps from Golden Knights practices, games, events and press conferences.
He begins his new role June 6, as the team prepares for the expansion draft and its first-ever NHL draft.
“Our goal is to provide our fans with exclusive and engaging content across all of our digital platforms,” Vegas president Kerry Bubolz said in a statement.
“Gary is a hockey expert, having covered the game extensively in one of the most passionate hockey markets in North America on television, radio, print and web. We hope Golden Knights fans will enjoy his reporting and insight that will come from being entrenched with the team.”
Lawless, a native of Peterborough, Ont., began his career in sports reporting in 1993 as the hockey beat reporter for the Thunder Bay Chronicle-Journal. He also worked for the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts as the club’s public relations director, before moving to Winnipeg to work as a copy editor, reporter and then columnist with the Free Press. He also worked alongside Andrew Paterson for years on the Hustler and Lawless radio show on TSN1290.
