Flames broke out in the former Merchant’s Hotel on Friday night, scorching the Selkirk Avenue landmark.
Firefighters rushed to the blaze at about 9:40 p.m. When they arrived, they could see flames and smoke through the second-floor windows along the building’s west side.
After dousing the flames, crews found fire damage to the first, second and third floors.
The cause is still under investigation, and no damage estimate is available yet.
Nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire.
The building, which was formerly a blighted hotel at the corner of Selkirk and Andrews, was shuttered in 2012 after a community coalition and the province stepped in with plans to revitalize the space.
Since then, it has been under construction, with plans to turn it into a mixed-use community space.
