Winnipeg police’s major crimes unit has arrested a suspect in the attempted abduction of a four-year-old girl on June 29 in the North End.

Police were searching for Ruben Kyle Mawakeesick, 26, and had issued a warrant for his arrest with charges of abduction of a person under 14, sexual assault, sexual interference, assault, and failure to comply with a probation order.

The girl and her mother were walking in the 300 block of McKenzie Street at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday when they were confronted by a man who grabbed the girl and attempted to take her away. The mother managed to fight the suspect off. While her daughter wasn’t physically harmed, the mother sustained minor injuries.

“This was incredibly brazen,” Const. Rob Carver said Thursday. “It was in the middle of the day, on a residential street.”
