Police are appealing to witnesses to share their accounts about a block party that turned violent, leaving three men with serious stab wounds.

The block party stood out in a rash of violence — seven people were stabbed in five separate incidents — that erupted around the city on Canada Day and spilled into the early morning hours on Sunday.

The medical conditions of the three victims from the block party remained unchanged Monday. Two were in stable condition, and one was in critical condition.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s major crimes unit is investigating but wants witnesses to step forward with information.

“There’s potential for so many witnesses here,” WPS spokesman Const. Jay Murray said Monday.

The block party on Smith Street and St. Mary Avenue took a dark turn just about 12:15 a.m. Sunday when police were called to break up a fight.

One witness who later spoke with the Free Press said she was walking north on Smith from Osborne Village with a group of friends when she saw a victim walking across Smith with “gushing blood from his chest.”

“Anybody who was driving past and saw this incident, please give us a call,” the police spokesman said.
