The Manitoba Moose have rounded out their herd by bringing in a highly successful Canadian university coach.

Marty Johnston fills the void created when assistant coach Mark Morrison was hired by Anaheim earlier this summer to assume the same role with Randy Carlyle’s Ducks. Johnston, 38, will join head coach Pascal Vincent and assistant coach Eric Dubois behind the bench for the farm team of the Winnipeg Jets.

Johnston has spent the past seven years as head coach of Carleton University’s men’s hockey program. He’s racked up a 129-49-12 record and led the team to two berths in the U Sports University Cup tournament.

He also represented Canada as an assistant coach at the 2017 FISU Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where Canada won a bronze medal.

Johnston played junior hockey with the Hull (Gatineau) Olympiques of the QMJHL, winning the Memorial Cup in 1997. He also played for Dalhousie University and captained the team for two seasons while being named the Atlantic University Sport MVP in 2001-02. Johnston played pro hockey for three seasons, with 17 American Hockey League games and 155 ECHL games, before turning his attention to coaching.

The Moose kick of their 2017-2018 season Oct. 6 in Grand Rapids. Their home opener is Oct. 13 against Cleveland.
