Starting pitcher Logan Hofmann scattered five hits over six innings to lead Saskatchewan to a 3-1 win over Manitoba in the gold-medal baseball game at the Canada Summer Games Friday night.

Tyler McWillie pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the winners in front of an overflow crowd at Shaw Park.

Connor Sparks gave Saskatchewan a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first and went to work again in the third inning, singling and come around to score on Ryan Olchoway’s base hit.

Manitoba staged an uprising in the sixth when Jon Patmore stroked a two-out single, stole second and scored on Jordan Peck’s single. However, Nolan Geekie lined out softly to end the threat.

Saskatchewan added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a passed ball.

Manitoba starter Zach Giesbrecht allowed two runs and five hits in three innings.

Manitoba advanced to the gold-medal game with a 1-0 semifinal win over Alberta in Thursday’s semifinal action. Saskatchewan earned a berth in the final by beating powerhouse Ontario 7-0. Alberta proceeded to win the bronze medal with a 5-1 decision over Ontario.
