A 15-year-old girl was stabbed while attending church in Winkler on Sunday.
The stabbing occurred shortly before 1 p.m. in the Pembina Valley Baptist Church, said the Winkler Police Service.
The girl suffered multiple stab wounds and was transported to Boundary Trails Hospital by ambulance, and then flown to Health Sciences Centre by STARS Air Ambulance. She was listed in stable condition as of Sunday night.
Winkler police arrested a 39-year-old male in the parking lot within minutes of their arrival. The man remains in custody and faces charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Winkler Mayor Martin Harder called the incident “very bizarre” but did not have any further details.
In a press release, Winkler police say they do not yet have a motive and are continuing the investigation.
