EDMONTON — The Winnipeg Jets were in a battle tonight in Edmonton without their most intimidating commando.

Veteran defenceman Dustin Byfuglien was a late scratch for the Winnipeg Jets and was replaced in the lineup by rookie Tucker Poolman, who made his NHL debut.

Byfuglien suffered an undisclosed injury in Saturday’s game in Calgary and didn’t practise Monday or participate in the morning skate.

He’s listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

“He came in for the (Monday) morning skate and tried to loosen it up and it didn’t quite warm up,” said Jets coach Paul Maurice after the game.

“Then he came in an hour before (the game), we do a bunch of things with these injuries and if he doesn’t feel right you don’t put him on the ice.”

The 32-year-old product of Roseau, Minn., has been a workhorse for the Jets, missing just 20 games over the last four seasons.

Poolman was a healthy scratch in Winnipeg’s season-opening 7-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Wednesday’s 6-3 defeat to the Flames.

Monday, he was paired with Toby Enstrom. Dmity Kulikov wass playing with Tyler Myers, while Josh Morrissey and Jacob Trouba were defensive partners.
